Eva Gonzalez. Rocking Chair. October 06th , 2017.
Many people prefer sitting on a rocking chair while watching television, reading books or magazines, and making handicrafts such as sewing or knitting because sitting on an ordinary chair for a long period time can be very tiring and uncomfortable. The rocking chair has an ergonomic design that allows you to remain seated for a long span of time without straining your back, and its rocking motion has a relaxing effect that can help you sleep peacefully after you've finished reading or knitting.
The older models of rocking chairs featured very high backs and thin slats. They were hand carved from quality wood. Antique rocking chairs are worth a great deal of money. The Gungstol and the Windsor were both introduced in the 1700's, today they are worth thousands of dollars depending on the shape they are in as well as the type of materials used. The early 1800's saw the introduction of rocking chairs that didn't have arms. They were well received by people who found them much easier to get in and out of. It was also easier to share the rocking chair with someone else. However, many people loved the first design, so the arm rocking chairs continued to be manufactured as well. Around the 1840's, rocking chairs began being made with machines rather than by hand. The Salem rocking chair was introduced at this time, featuring a lower back.
Those who already own a rocker or two don't need to be told of the wonders of this humble type of furniture, but for those of us who have yet to make a rocker a part of our lives, we might benefit from a little information regarding rockers. The first thing to know is that there are rockers to suit all people, even those who find rockers a little hazardous due to the potential for crushed toes (these people will want to go with a glider rocking chair). Wooden rocking chairs are the most popular rockers by far, but there are also wicker rocking chairs as well as plastic rocking chairs. Most people will prefer natural materials, but artificial ones like resin wicker and plastic can make good outdoor rocking chairs that are better able to cope with direct sunlight, rain, etc. When buying a rocker, make sure to get a good feeling for the chair by sitting in it and just rocking for a while.
Rockers are made of several parts or components that contribute to its overall design and functionality. The curved pieces of wood are called rockers, and this serves as the main base of your rocking chair. Although rockers is also the term that is used to refer to a rocking chair, the term rocker for craftsmen refer to the curved wood fixed at the base of the legs of the rocking chair. These rockers must be made with utmost precision and care so that a soft, balanced rocking motion is achieved by the chair whenever it is set in motion. Many people, however, meet accidents with rockers as feet and toes can get easily crushed underneath them whenever the chair is in motion. Because of this, more modern rockers have springs that alleviate this concern. The backrests of the rocking chair function like the backrests of traditional chairs. The backrests of rocking chairs however, are designed to provide more comfortable back support. They have a slight bend or angle to more effectively catch a reclining posture. This is also to retain comfort even while the occupant is rocking back and forth with the rocking chair. The legs of a rocking chair functions like the legs of a regular chair, only that they are quite thicker and shorter because the legs are mounted to the rocker. Armrests are not always there, because some rocking chairs do not have armrests. Rocking chairs with armrests provide higher levels of comfort, though.
Varieties. There can be many varieties of padding or rockers cushioning available in a market. The rocker cushioning may range from expensive silk and leather fabric to cotton and cheaper foam padding. If you are looking for some stylish look, with enhanced comfort and décor then choose pure leather padding. The primary advantage of leather padding is that you need not have to worry about its maintenance first and secondly it is easy to clean, but it's surely an expensive treat to have.
