Reyna Bush. Rocking Chair. April 06th , 2018.
Michael Thonet, a German craftsman, created the first bentwood rocking chair in 1860. This design is distinguished by its graceful shape and its light weight. Thonet used bent steamed wood for these rocking chairs. Because of their affordability and beautiful design, bentwood rocking chairs not only became famous around the world but spawned countless imitators as well. Neoclassical designs also became a trend in the US during the 1890s. These rocking chairs were influenced by Greek and Roman designs as well as Renaissance and colonial era artistry. During the 1920s, however, folding rocking chairs became more popular in the US and in Europe. They were handy for outdoor activities and travel purposes. By the 1950s, rocking chairs built by Sam Maloof, a US craftsman, became famous for their durability and deluxe appearance. Maloof's rocking chairs are distinguished by their ski-shaped rockers.
Those who already own a rocker or two don't need to be told of the wonders of this humble type of furniture, but for those of us who have yet to make a rocker a part of our lives, we might benefit from a little information regarding rockers. The first thing to know is that there are rockers to suit all people, even those who find rockers a little hazardous due to the potential for crushed toes (these people will want to go with a glider rocking chair). Wooden rocking chairs are the most popular rockers by far, but there are also wicker rocking chairs as well as plastic rocking chairs. Most people will prefer natural materials, but artificial ones like resin wicker and plastic can make good outdoor rocking chairs that are better able to cope with direct sunlight, rain, etc. When buying a rocker, make sure to get a good feeling for the chair by sitting in it and just rocking for a while.
On cold summer nights, there is nothing like spending time at the porch sitting on a wicker rocking chair with a hot Choco to warm you up. Indeed, it is one of those moments in your life when you just want to hear the rain while feeling cosy with a book in your hand. If these are your way of relaxing, then you may be one of those people who might need to purchase their own wicker chair.
Rockers are usually made of hardwood, and this makes them really durable and strong. Aside from making the rocking chairs stronger and long-lasting, hardwoods provide aesthetic value to rockers because of their beautiful colors and grain. Hardwoods' properties add flair and beauty to rocking chairs, and this adds to their design value. Adding a hardwood rocking chair carved beautifully and made with intricate designs will surely add spice to an otherwise bland room.
Today's rocking chairs may also come with an ottoman or a foot stool that rocks or sways along with the rocking chair or glider. This is a relatively new addition to the rocking chair, which contributes to an even more relaxing effect. Padded or cushioned ottomans are the most popular, which allows you to rest your tired and aching feet on a soft surface. Because the swinging ottoman provides an increased comfort, it works perfect for the elderly and pregnant women.
